Forms Follow Function

Oct 1 - 15, 2026

Our world consists of various shapes, colors, and volumes, most of them performing some function or allowing us to coerce them into doing so. As I experience my own personal slice of the world, I’m influenced by it all, inspired by it all.

Sometimes I actually take random things I find and incorporate them into my work or I use them figuratively in what I create, using paint, charcoal and a variety of materials. In every case, these new forms are by nature informed by the original function they served.

Louis Sullivan, the famous midwestern architect and mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright, originally coined the term “Form follows function” to express his philosophy about design. I’ve co-opted it with a twist to express my perspective.
